ThaiSim 2012

Sessions proposals & deadlines

The theme of ThaiSim 2012 is
Reality and learning in educational games: Looking forward to ASEAN.

This is to be interpreted broadly.  It might include such questions as:

bulletHow do people learn in games?
bulletHow can we help people learn better from games?
bulletWhat is the nature of learning in games?
bulletWhat is the reality of participation and engagement in games?
bulletHow real must a game be to learn?
bulletWhat are the realities of learning in a game?
bulletHow can we help participants to link game reality to reality outside?
bulletHow can learning with games help to prepare for the AC*?
bulletWhat realities of the AC* help or hinder the use of games for learning?
bulletWhat AC trends can be helped by games?
bulletWhat AC developments are likely to encourage the use of games?
bulletHow should games be adapted for use in ASEAN countries?
bulletWhat AC* trends are conducive to the developmet of a specific AC* game market?
bulletWhat is the role of debriefing in learning and game reality?
bulletEtc.
* AC = ASEAN Community, made up of
the ASEAN Security Community, the ASEAN Economic Community and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community

Pls note that we use the term game rather loosely to include many forms of experiential learning exercises, such as simulation, role-play and serious game.  See 'relevant terms' on our home page.

We encourage you to run a session at the ThaiSim conference.  Even if you have never presented before in a conference, there is always a first time, and ThaiSim conferences are an ideal place as the delegates are warm and friendly people.

Deadlines for session proposals = 30 March, 2012
We may be able to accept proposals for a few days after this, but they must be done perfectly, in correct English, according to the ThaiSim conference proposal guidelines.

Please make sure that you send in your proposal well before the deadline.  Detailed deadlines are as follows:

Deadlines

Notification of selected abstracts As they are accepted
Session titles and authors posted in the preliminary programme on the web As they are accepted
Latest notification of selected abstracts 5 April, 2012

Submission of full paper for proceedings

After the conference

We do not yet know if we will have proceedings or if a special issue of SG4ED will be published.

Do not wait until the last day.  The earlier you send in your abstract, (the more time you will have to revise it if necessary), and the sooner you will be mentioned in the preliminary programme to be posted on this web.

If you wish to submit a paper for inclusion in the conference proceedings, go to the proceedings page.

Information on how to submit your proposal is below.

Proposals

We hope that you will run a session at the conference.  We will have four main types of session, as follows:

1. Paper presentations – 20m

These are the classic type of conference session.  At ThaiSim we do encourage you to stay as practical as possible, by involving the audience, maybe in a short exercise to illustrate a point.  The session length is 35 minutes.  Your actual paper should be about 15 minutes (maximum).  This will allow the audience opportunity for commentary and questions in the remaining 5 minutes; please do not neglect this part..

2. Short workshops (hands-on) sessions – 50m or 80m

These are important sessions in a conference on games, simulations, experiential and hands-on learning.  These sessions must be activity-based and involve participation from the audience.  The session must not be used simply to allow yourself a long paper.  These sessions must contain a substantial portion of hands-on participation in a simulation, game or experiential exercise, followed by debriefing and then discussion of the simulation/game.  These last two portions are important - please do not neglect them.

3. Evening game-play sessions about 120m (2hrs) - maybe longer

These sessions are improvised during the two free evenings of the conference: Evenings on Day 1 and on Day 2.  The length of the session may vary, but you should plan for a maximum of about two hours.

Anyone who would like to run a game is free to do so.  You do not need to send in a proposal by the deadline.  However, if you send in a proposal by the deadline, your session (a) will be in the programme book, (b) will thus be guaranteed a place, and (c) will therefore probably attract more people.

Whether or not you send in your abstract for a session during the evening game session to be included in the programme book, you should in both cases bring your abstract in the form of a small poster (maximum one A4 size page) to post on the board for the evening session.  This poster is to attract participants to your session, so make it simple, clear and attractive, and explain what participants can expect to be able to get out of your session.

These sessions must contain essentially hands-on participation in a simulation, game or experiential exercise, followed by debriefing and then discussion of the simulation/game.  These last two parts are important - please do not neglect them.

4. Poster sessions

You may prefer to present you work in the form of a poster.  This type of session is flexible, and you can put almost anything in your poster, but make sure that you follow the guidelines.

ThaiSim conference proposal guidelines

Before sending in your proposal it is important to get the ThaiSim conference proposal guidelines.  (To download the pdf file, right click on the link, and then "save as".)

Follow the guidelines carefully, as they will tell you how to do your proposal so that it has the maximum chance of being accepted.  Send your proposal to ts.proposals |@| gmail.com

Accepted sessions

A list of already accepted sessions are posted on the programme page.

Equipment

The usual equipment will be available at the conference centre.  This includes: screen, OHP, LCD, computer, Microsoft PC, Internet access in the room, printing, limited paying photocopying facilities.  However, please check with the conference organizer for precise details.

You are advised to bring your own laptop computer and, on arrival, well before your session, to check that it will work with the video projector in your designated room.

If you do not bring a laptop, then check that your USB drive (flash drive, pen drive, handy drive, clef USB, memory stick, thumb drive, jump drive, etc). works in the conference computer.  You should have the correct format for your ppt file.  We advise that you save it, with special fonts embedded, and in PowerPoint 2003, that is, .ppt, (not .pptx).
